The wood-panelled Potager restaurant serves up wonderfully fresh dishes made with vegetables and herbs picked from the kitchen garden. Produce is sourced locally wherever possible to create the most delicious modern British dishes. Across from the hotel, there’s also The Village Pub, which has an exciting menu that combines classic pub food with imaginative flair.

The rates may be steep, but you get a lot of luxury for what you pay. Epicurean breakfasts, served in the Potager, include bread from the in-house bakery and cooked options such as hash browns with green beans and eggs from the hotel's brood of hens. Afternoon teas have become an increasingly popular feature under the Timothy Oulton ownership, with a menu offering a wide tea selection plus Pimm's, G&Ts and mocktails to accompany scones, savoury bakes and more.

Expect simple, beautifully cooked dishes such as celeriac lasagne and Tamworth pork belly with roasted apples and cauliflower purée. In the summer, ask about The Temple, where supper is served in the gardens. There are four acres of formal gardens, including a laburnum avenue and a potager. The Arcadian space was the near-legendary creation of garden designer Rosemary Verey, who owned the house from 1952 until her death in 2001, after which it became a hotel. In 2022, it was acquired by British interior design company Timothy Oulton – the space now serves both as a serene hotel and a place to showcase the brand's handmade furniture. Each of the 18 rooms and suites at Barnsley House is dressed in soft, earthy hues that reflect the natural surroundings.
